March 7, 2021
If you’re missing all or most of your teeth, you’re probably considering dentures. This easy, cost-effective treatment will restore your smile back to it’s full beauty while allowing you to eat more foods. However, you may be wondering about how long it will take to complete your treatment. Before committing to this life-changing replacement option, read on to learn about the time it takes to get dentures and the factors that can influence your length of treatment.
No Two Smiles Are the Same
The time it takes to get your dentures will vary depending on a few factors. From your very first appointment, to when you’re wearing your new dentures, a lot needs to happen to ensure that you enjoy a comfortable, lifelike, and durable set of teeth. Here is a step-by-step process for getting dentures and the length of treatment for each portion:
Preexisting Issues
The first part of the dentures process is ensuring that your mouth is prepared. This involves treatment of preexisting issues like gum disease or other infections. Additionally, if you still have some teeth, your dentist will need to extract them before they can create full dentures. The extraction site will need some time to heal, which can last a few months.
Creating a Mockup
Once your mouth is prepared, your dentist will take impressions of your gums, which are used to create a mockup or model of your dentures. They will also take measurements of your mouth to ensure that the bite is correct and comfortable. Once a mockup is created, it will be sent to a hi-tech dental lab for the creation of your dentures.
Necessary Adjustments
Next, you’ll attend adjustment appointments. During these visits, your dentist will see that the mockup dentures fit properly. They will make sure that your prosthetic matches the overall appearance of your face, and that the artificial teeth are the correct length. If artificial teeth aren’t the right size, they can dramatically change the overall aesthetics of your smile.
Placing the Dentures
Once final adjustments are made, complete dentures can be placed with confidence. However, there are sometimes more necessary adjustments, plus it’s common for there to be some slight soreness. Dentures are comfortable, but they will take some getting used to once you have them in your mouth. Over time, dentures can become ill-fitting from natural wear and tear, which is why you should expect multiple adjustment appointments over time.
No need to worry about the length of your treatment when in the hands of an expert. But, now that you know exactly what to expect, you’ll have peace of mind when you get your dentures.
